A World of Wikis

When it comes to creating wikis, there are mainly two types; public and private. Public wikis are the ones that anyone can have access to and, in many cases, make any edits they want. These are the most common wiki types on the web, and the content that they cover ranges from general knowledge to more niche pieces of information. The most widely known public wikis are the ones that belong to the Wikimedia movement, which are a series of wikis that share every kind of free knowledge, including Wikipedia. While they usually tend be created for recreational purposes, public wikis can also be used professionally. In her article for Slite, "The Slite Guide to Building a Team Wiki", Melanie Broder stated:

"In a business context, public wikis can be used for collaboration with outside contributors, such as agencies or contractors. Corporate wikis are also increasingly being used as self-service customer service websites, or helpdesks. When customers run into problems, they can consult the company's public wiki, get FAQs answered, and troubleshoot their own problems. This is a great resource for clients, and cuts down on customer service workloads and wait times."

Private wikis, are the other hand, are the ones that restrict user access and edits. They're primarily used professionally, with many of them containing company data that only certain individuals like employees can use, and have tight security to prevent unwanted guests from breaking in. There are also personal wikis, which are private wikis made for personal use.
