How to Build a Wiki
Before creating a wiki, you need to have permission to do so, otherwise you can't make one. According to Microsoft Support in their "Create and Edit a Wiki" page:
"You need to have permission to create a site, library, or pages. But the good news is, if a site has been shared with you and you have permission to edit it, you most likely have permission to create a wiki."
Once you get permission, it's important to note that wikis are team sites and can take a good amount of effort to create a single one, so it's a good idea to work alongside contributors who have their own specialized roles and functions. Once you have those two things taken care of, the process of creating a wiki is as follows:
- Identify the goals of your wiki, what issues it's supposed to solve, and what information should be prioritized.
- Choose a wiki software that best suits the site you're trying to create. These range from complex ones that offer everyting and the kitchen sink, to simple ones that help organize Google Docs.
- Figure out where to source all the information for the wiki and which contributors should collect it.
- Hold a meeting with your contributors regarding the progress and functionality of the wiki.
- (Optional) Work with a template to help create your wiki faster. This is especially useful for those who have trouble creating a new one from scratch.
