ENG 573/679: Writing for the Web

Chapter 5 Textbook Exercises

Due date: Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 11:59 pm

Points value: 10 points

After you have finished with the exercises in Chapter 4, it’s time to move on to Chapter 5. In this chapter, we'll be working with images.

Instructions for Chapter 5

When you get to p. 171 ("img: it's not just relative links anymore"), create a new html file in your chapter5 folder called "trivia.html" and add the HTML from the exercise as well as the image element, as described in the textbook. You'll use this file from p. 171 to p. 173 ("Always provide an alternative").

For the myPod exercise starting on p. 175 ("Creating the ultimate fan site: myPod"), create a folder called "mypod" inside your chapter5 folder. Then, open the downloaded textbook files for this chapter (specifically, Head-First-HTML-master/chapter5/mypod), and copy the following files into your own chapter5 folder:

These are the files you'll be working with for the rest of the chapter.

On p. 181 ("Resize the image to fit in the browser"), you can either download a free trial of Photoshop Elements at the URL the book provides, or you can use any photo editing software you have access to. (Your computer most likely already has one installed that you should be able to use to accomplish most—if not all—of the image editing for this chapter.)

You can skip the "Which image format?" exercise on p. 189.

On p. 202 ("Open the myPod logo"), you'll be working with transparency in an image file. Photoshop or Photoshop Elements will allow you to work with a transparent file, but you may not be able to do so in every image editing photo program. Try it out: If you can't open it or figure out how to adjust the transparency in the image editing program you're using, just follow along without making those changes. Do what you can.

Remember to let me know if you have any questions.
