ENG 573/679: Writing for the Web

Getting Started with Head First HTML and CSS

This textbook, while dorky and filled with mid-2000s-era humor, is a great introduction to HTML and CSS. It’s meant for absolute beginners, so don’t be nervous. You can absolutely do this.

How to Read This Textbook

Each chapter will introduce you to different aspects of HTML and CSS through exposition as well as tutorials. As part of this class, you will be following along with the exercises in each chapter and submitting those files to Brightspace.

Read the text carefully. Sometimes, the authors put instructions in margin notes, asides, or diagrams, so be sure to read everything on the page. You can’t skim this text, or you’ll end up missing key instructions for the chapter’s exercise.

How to Download Textbook Files

Download the files posted on the Head First HTML and CSS website. Click the "Get the Source Code" box, and a zipped folder called "Head-First-HTML-Master" will automatically start downloading. Once it's downloaded, unzip the file and save it to your computer.

How to Organize Chapter Files

Do you remember the chapter folders you created for Week 1's participation prompt? You'll use them to organize your textbook exercises. Any files you make or manipulate while following the tutorial in a chapter will live in your corresponding chapter folder.

Throughout the textbook tutorials, you will often copy and paste files from the folder you just downloaded to your own chapter folders. Just remember to work within your own chapter folders and files.

When you are finished following the tutorial in a chapter and are ready to submit your work, zip the chapter folder, name the zipped folder according to class instructions (ex: 573-welker-lydia-chapter1.zip or 679-welker-lydia-chapter1.zip), and upload to the corresponding assignment folder on Brightspace.
